Make sure the dryer is plugged in and the door closes firmly.

Check the breaker panel. An electric dryer uses two breakers, and one can trip while the drum still turns.

Clean the lint screen and make sure the vent hose behind the dryer is not crushed.

For a gas dryer, check that the gas supply valve is open — but if you smell gas, leave and call 911 from outside.

A restricted exhaust makes a dryer run hot and slow, wears out parts early and can become a fire hazard. The photo shows lint we found packed around a dryer’s blower.
Clean the lint screen after every load, and have the inside of the dryer and the vent run checked about once a year. When you book, ask whether the dryer, the vent or both need attention.

Why is my dryer running but not heating?
On an electric dryer the usual causes are a failed heating element, a blown thermal fuse or one tripped breaker. On a gas dryer it is often the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. A blocked vent can cause any of these to fail, so we check the airflow too.
Why are my clothes taking so long to dry?
Most of the time it is restricted airflow: a clogged lint screen, a crushed hose or a blocked vent run. It can also be a weak heating element, a bad moisture sensor or a worn drum seal. We test heat and airflow to find out which.
Do you repair gas and electric dryers?
