Troubleshooting an LG Refrigerator That Is Not Cooling

If your LG refrigerator is not cooling, start with four simple checks: the settings and any error code, airflow and door closure, a recent power interruption, and what to do if cooling still doesn’t come back. Protect your food, and note the model number and any error code before you call. If cooling doesn’t recover, we can diagnose the fans, controls, defrost system and sealed system as part of our refrigerator repair service, instead of assuming the compressor has failed.

1. Check the settings and any error code

Make sure the refrigerator and freezer are set to their normal temperatures (LG suggests about 37°F and 0°F) and that a display or demo mode hasn’t been switched on, which can stop the cooling. If the display shows an error code, write it down or take a photo and look it up in your owner’s manual before you reset anything; a reset can clear information a technician would use. With no error code, one power reset can clear a control glitch: unplug the refrigerator, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. If that doesn’t help, don’t keep resetting it.

2. Check airflow and door closure

Make sure every door and drawer closes fully and that food, ice or a shelf isn’t holding a door open or pressing on a gasket. Keep the air vents inside both compartments clear; packed shelves can block the cold air. Door sensors and fan behavior vary by model, so if a door light stays on or an alarm sounds with the doors shut, mention it when you call.

3. Think about a recent power interruption

If the power went out overnight, the refrigerator could have warmed up even with the doors closed. Many refrigerators show an alert after a power outage or surge, and clocks on your other appliances showing the wrong time are another clue. After the power comes back, an LG refrigerator may wait before it starts the compressor, and newer inverter compressors run very quietly, so not hearing the compressor doesn’t prove it has failed. Keep the doors closed and give it a few hours to recover.

4. If cooling still doesn’t recover

If the refrigerator is still warm after these checks, the cause is usually one of the parts behind the panels: an evaporator or condenser fan, the defrost system, the controls or, less often, the sealed system. Move perishables somewhere cold and call (405) 534-4788 with the model number and any error code, and we’ll find the cause before recommending a repair.

Call for Service

It helps to know your model number when you call for service. Here’s how to find your model and serial tag.

If you can’t find it, the technician will locate it when they arrive.
