Most dishwasher trouble starts with a symptom you can see: dishes still dirty, water left in the tub, poor drying, a leak, or a cycle that won’t start. Some of these have simple checks you can do yourself, as your owner’s manual allows: clean the filter, check how the racks are loaded, look at the cycle and options you chose, and look for a kinked drain hose under the sink. Stop using the dishwasher if it leaks or trips a breaker. If a problem keeps coming back, it needs a diagnosis rather than a guessed replacement part.
Common dishwasher problems
| Symptom | Safe check | When to call |
|---|---|---|
| Dishes still dirty | Clean the filter and spray arms as your manual describes, don’t overload the racks or block the spray arms, and use fresh detergent. | Dishes are still dirty after those checks, or the wash sounds weak. |
| Streaks or spots | Hard water leaves mineral spots. Use rinse aid set for your water hardness; a dishwasher cleaner can remove buildup. | Spots come back quickly, or a film won’t come off. |
| Water left in the tub | Clean the filter and check the drain hose for kinks. If the dishwasher drains through a garbage disposal, run the disposal first. | Water still won’t drain, or the dishwasher shows a drain code. |
| Dishes don’t dry | Drying depends on the cycle and options, the rinse aid, how it’s loaded and the dishwasher’s drying design (some don’t use a heating element). Check your manual. | Drying has suddenly changed, or glass and dishes are wet on every load. |
| Runs too long | Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting. Some cycles are long by design. | Cycles are much longer than they used to be, or the display shows a code. |
| Leaks | Stop using it. Make sure you’re using dishwasher detergent (other soaps make suds that leak out) and that nothing blocks the door. | Any other leak, or water under the dishwasher. |
| Rack doesn’t roll | See whether the rack has come off its track or a roller is cracked; your manual lists the replacement rollers. | The track or door is damaged. |
Repair or replace?
Age alone doesn’t decide it. Compare the written repair estimate with the cost of a suitable replacement, and think about the dishwasher’s overall condition and whether parts are still available. A cracked inner tub that leaks is usually a reason to replace.
